The most famous museum of Madrid has a twenty per cent increase of artwork displayed in twelve new halls that has been opened to the public this week.
The new additions are 176 pieces that belong to the XIX century. As a result, the exposition of the Spanish art that starts in 12th century with the Romanic painting of San Baudelio de Berlanga, it is now extended to the beginning of 20th century with the first avant-garde works.
The 152 paintings, 2 watercolours, 21 sculptures and the scale model that are now enlarging the modern painting collection, belong to El Prado since its inauguration in 1819. Some of these works are displayed for the first time such “El coacero francés” by José de Madrazo and “La niña María Figueroa vestida de menina” by Joaquín Sorolla.
